Meals on Wheels is a very worthwhile & important community service. This service assists individuals to remain in their own homes avoiding unnecessary or premature admission to a health care facility. Good nutrition is vital to their health & well-being as is the social contact provided when meals are delivered.
Volunteers are the CORNERSTONE of our service. Each volunteer is introduced to the organization and volunteer expectations and safety training through an orientation with office staff. New volunteers are sent out on routes with experienced volunteers as part of the orientation process.
A team of 2 people – one driver and one courier – is assigned to each route to deliver meals to clients in their homes. Meals are picked up at the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization (LSCO) at 10:45 each morning, and deliveries are complete by 12:30.
We have many flexible options for volunteers! While some people prefer to deliver the same day each week to the same clients, others are best suited to a casual or “call in” schedule. Each volunteer who delivers meals as a driver or courier is required to submit a criminal record check prior to delivering.
- Annual income tax benefits by claiming mileage in exchange for a charitable receipt at the end of December.
- Refreshments in the LSCO dining room on volunteer days.
- The great feeling of assisting clients in need, and making their day brighter!
“One of the best parts of my week is delivering for Meals on Wheels and seeing my regular clients and the other volunteers. I have been delivering for more than 15 years!”
A criminal record check is required to volunteer simply because you will be entering private homes. If you are interested in volunteering with us, please let us know and we will provide you with a letter that will allow you to get a record check done at no cost.
We would love to hear from you!!!
